What Resume Template should I use?

 

Well that depends on a few things really, for example If you don’t have much experience, if you took a long break from work or are changing careers then we don’t want to make your work experience the main thing recruiters focus on. On the other hand if you have strong relevant work experience dating back 5 to 10 years and plan to pursue your current career path then of course we want to highlight that aspect of your resume more. There are strengths and weaknesses associated with certain types of Resume Templates so let’s discuss what Resume Template is the best to use and when to use a resume template.

 

1)    Functional Resume Template

 

 

Why use a Functional Resume Template

  • It highlights your relevant skills
  • Accomplishments
  • Community involvement
  • Makes work experience secondary
  • If written correctly a recruiter could see potential and get passed the lack of work experience.

When to use a Functional Resume Template

  • If you held only a few jobs unrelated to what you are applying for
  • If you are changing careers
  • If you have big long gaps in employment
  • If you are a recent graduate trying to enter a certain industry

Weaknesses and Cautions to take into considerations

  • Recruiters don’t like Functional Resumes as they are hard to scan for the main requirements that the particular position seeks.
  • Contains irrelevant information for certain jobs that could work against you
  • It’s easy for recruiters to tell that you are avoiding talking about your work experience
  • Lacks focus and tends to be longer than it should

 

2)    Chronological Resume Template

 

Why use a Chronological Resume Template

  • It makes you competitive
  • Recruiters love them as they can quickly scan the resume for experience and educationWhich Resume template is thh best
  • It avoids unnecessary jargon
  • It has a definite focus

When to use a Chronological Resume Template

  • If you have strong work experience relating to the position you are applying for
  • If you are applying for a career track position
  • If you are applying for a promotion or looking for the next step up with a different company

Weaknesses and Cautions to take into considerations

  • Many times it leaves out very important information that could work against you, such as technical skills, and some vital abilities that certain positions require
  • People tend to write the same things for all positions which tends to have a repetitive feel

 

3)    Hybrid Resume Template or Combination Resume Template (My favorite)

I always advise all my clients to choose a hybrid resume template. I like them because they are still scannable, meaning that I can quickly take a look at your education, and then jump to your work experience. It also doesn’t leave out some very important information such as technical skills, associations and organizations you are part of, and your other skills and abilities that pertain to the position you are applying for. It combines the functional resume template with a chronological resume template.

Why use a Hybrid Resume Template or Combination Resume Template

  • It highlights your education and experience
  • Recruiters love them as they can quickly scan the resume
  • It doesn’t leave out relevant information

When to use a Hybrid Resume Template

  • If you have employment gaps in your work history
  • If you are switching careers
  • If you are reentering the workforce
  • If you are recent graduate

Weaknesses and Cautions to take into considerations

  • It can be hard to keep the resume to a manageable size
  • If you have strong work experience and are applying to a position that is very similar to your experience I would chose a chronological format.
  • If you have absolutely no experience I would stick to a functional resume

    I worked in the Insurance Industry for 15 years from 1987 to 1996 (part-time for 2 years)
    Raised children for 10 years, starting working managing a food service school program for Aramark for 3 yrs then at a non-for-profit building a Culinary Arts Training Program and cafe within the organization. I’am currently unemployed and wanting to go back return to the Insurance Industry. I was licensed for the 14 years, then I non renewed it (raising kids) I am currently enrolled in an Insurance Licensing school to obtain my license again. Should I just show my Insurance experience? or do I include my current job experience ? there is a 12 year lapse. How should I go about building a resume?

      I would definitely include your current experience in the resume for several reasons. It has been 17 years since you worked in an insurance field and listing that large of a gap will make any recruiter simply skip your resume and move onto the next one.What I would focus on is making your current experience as relevant as possible towards an insurance job. I’m assuming you will go into insurance sales, correct me if I’m wrong. I took a few minutes to browse a few insurance agent positions on Craigslist and here is what I would like to see if I was hiring for an insurance agent.

      All your bullet points should include something about the following.

      Ability to develop relationships with companies, investors, and individuals in order to push through program incentives and policies.

      Created, developed and presented to large groups in order to sell and implement my training program initiatives.

      Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.

      Develops base for long-term sources of clients by using referrals, occupational, and special-interest groups to compile lists of prospects for future business development success

      Determines clients’ particular needs and financial situations by scheduling fact-finding appointments; determining extent of present coverage and investments; ascertaining long-term program goals

      So in order to have your resume be relevant you want to make every and any bullet point count and be relevant for the hiring person. Just because it was a food program that you worked on, it does not mean that you have to talk about coffee or the lunch menu. You want to position yourself as a sales person, somebody who is able to sell people on their idea and make them buy into you. Focus on your ability to develop relationships and gain leads. You can talk about how your relationships from one position lead into an opportunity for a better one down the road. Use a combination resume, state your current licenses on top. As an objective talk about how you have a large network, your understanding of the current market in terms of the retirement market and its growth where you will be able to make the most impact on. In conclusion always ask yourself the question is what I’m wiring relevant to the job, does it make me look good as an insurance agent, and how would this benefit the company. Lastly I would jump on LinkedIn and create a really outstanding profile. I would add as many insurance recruiters as possible and follow as many insurance companies in your areas. Add people, organizations etc and make sure that everybody you know writes a nice recommendation for you.

    I am a student who will be getting my associates degree in accounting next winter. I want to start applying what I am learning to a real world job. How should I fill out my resume if I haven’t had any official experience?
